Lapidar II

"Diamond is the name of the precious gemstone, in its primitive state or lapidated. Its composition is very simple, since it is a common carbon. The brilliant, in turn, is one of the various types of possible lapidation techniques for the diamond.
The brilliant cut conceived in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky is round shaped, with 57 or 58 facets. It is one of the lapidation techniques that give most radiance and beauty to the diamond. It is so well known that its name became a popular synonym for the diamond." - H. Stern Service Center
